Semipermeable membrane
The active ingredients in the core of SMARTBEADS® are coated with a semi-permeable membrane using a special process in our contract manufacturing process called "protective coating". This process allows the semi-permeable membrane to be applied very thinly, which enables an active ingredient content of over 80%. The dissolution rate of the membrane is determined by the properties of the outer membrane. This is determined depending on the active ingredient and the respective dissolution profile ensures that the active ingredient is protected from uncontrolled physiological and chemical decomposition (4). In our contract manufacturing process, we can control the properties of this membrane very precisely (3).

Dissolution
After ingestion, pores are formed due to the dissolution of parts of the membrane, which allow liquid to enter the core and thus the dissolution of the active ingredient and the diffusion of the dissolved active ingredient out of the system (1). This nature of the external membrane enables a controlled release of the active ingredient in the core (2). The dissolution profiles are adapted and selected by the internal product development department depending on the requirements profile of the active ingredients. A "time-released coating" is possible, i.e. a delayed dissolution of the active ingredient of up to 8 hours.

The dissolution profile of the active ingredient can be controlled very precisely. This means that an active ingredient can be released evenly over a long period of time, at intervals, or several active ingredients can be released at different time intervals (intervals of up to 8 hours).
